How to Study for a
Unit Exam
The process outlined here is applicable to any Unit Exam. You would simply be using other literature and additional sets of notes.
Ethics Unit
Literature studied
o Ethics (poem by Linda Pastan)

o My Last Duchess
o Mirror Image
o Hey, Come on Out
o Progress
o Lessons from a Walk in the Rainforest
o A Secret Lost in the Water
o Poetry:
o Satiric Poetry: all poems in section
o Didactic: Poems listed
Dramatic Monologue
Grammar and Punctuation:
There are 8 grammar and punctuation questions.
Use the Canadian Writer’s Reference to review apostrophe placement, homonyms and semi-colon use. These books are at the front of the classroom. You should use them in class, as there are not enough to take home.
Resource Unit on Weebly
Review the Notes in the Resource Unit—Theory for English 20.
You will find an “Elements of Fiction” presentation and some extra definitions.
Think about how you would apply that theory to the stories and poems that you have studied in class.
Ethics Unit.
Review the Ethical Decision Making Presentation. There is another copy of notes used in this unit there as well.
To Review Each Piece of Literature:
Address each piece of literature/poetry in this manner:
Plot: 2 sentences.
Eg. Mirror Image: This story is about a girl who undergoes a brain transplant. She struggles with being essentially two people.
Theme or thesis: 2 sentences
Eg. In Mirror Image the author delves into the essence of identity. She examines the conflicts between who you are inside and who you are on the outside. The identity crisis the main character faces is not resolved, but must be accepted.
Relevant technical devices and examples thereof:
Eg. Mirror Image: Allusion: There is an allusion inherent in the character’s name. Her name is Alice and this alludes to Alice in Wonderland and her journey through the Looking Glass.
