What is a Socratic Seminar?
-it is a discussion of the questions that have arisen from the study of the texts.
-it is an expression of a considered opinion - if you have that opinion it must be firmly defended by reference to the text or to an article you have located.
-there are no winner or losers
-everyone is judged individually
-the spotlight must be shared equally

Preparing for your Socratic Seminar - This is your Unit Exam!
When we have our discussion of the true nature of humans we are:
1. Answering the Essential Questions you will find at the beginning of the unit.
2. Defending our opinions with specific examples from the literature -- you need to know the names of the characters in the stories and the events that you are specifically referencing. Vague references undermine your argument.
eg. Jake's character has changed. At the beginning he was selfish and uncaring. Later in the movie he sees value in the Navi culture and accepts the connection with Aywa. (opinion)
Jake's initial interview with Colonel Miles -- where he agrees to spy for the military is played to Grace and Parker. His change in position clearly shown in this clip. (defense)
3. Using several pieces of text to defend your opinion.
4. Understanding the elements of character -- as in, what characteristics constitute a good person? an evil person? Know the words that will describe the characters.

Process
Meet your group. Choose a leader who will moderate the discussion.
Identify the opinions of the individuals in the group. You will not all believe the same thing.
Set up a Google Doc with your group. Set the questions up in the Doc. Everyone should contribute examples to the questions. Each person should record their contributions in a separate colour. Each person would express an opinion and a defense of it.
Discuss the order of discussion, keeping in mind that you have 15 minutes to fill and each person must speak. The moderator will move the group from question to question.
